The Waterboy NZ

Citizen’s Name: Thomas Nabbs

Project/Cause: The Waterboy NZ

Position: Founder/CEO

Location: Hamilton, New Zealand

What is the The Waterboy all about?

The Waterboy works to break down barriers to give New Zealanders an opportunity to participate in sport.

We identify those groups and individuals who want to do sport but are unable for some reason, and create initiatives to break down barriers and give them those opportunities. We then film the initiatives to capture the story and give businesses an opportunity to partner with us as a means of showing their values.

How long have you been operating?

18 months

Where did the idea start?

I believe in the power of OPPORTUNITY. I believe that everyone deserves a chance.

I also believe that sport changes live.

In the past many New Zealanders have had the opportunity to play sport. It’s taught us lesson and given us friendships which help shape our character. Sport is a large part of what makes up the fabric of our society.

It breaks my heart to know that many New Zealanders today do not have the opportunity to participate in sport.

So I set about trying to change that.

How do TOWNHALL Citizens or visitors get involved and are you open to collaboration? If so, what kind?

We are always open to collaboration.

We have partnered with Proud to Play NZ to deliver the homophobia in sport speaker series ‘17.

We are always seeking volunteers to help execute our initiatives and provide ongoing mentorship to people who we support (often transport is a barrier, and often sport is not the only pillar of their life they need extra support).

We are always seeking commercial partners and sponsor.

We are always open to suggestion on awesome ideas that will help achieve our why and make the world a better place.

Do you have any success stories?

Anaru’s Story

Bikes for boys

Homophobia in sport ‘16

These are just a few. We have more we are releasing over the coming months.

Do you have a project on TOWNHALL or an important event or mission coming up?

Not at the moment. Always new things popping up though so I’ll be sure to let you know

Any interesting fact you can share?

¼ children in NZ now live below the poverty line. That’s increased from ⅛ when I was a boy. How can we expect parents to prioritise paying sports expenses over life’s necessities (food, shelter, heating) – We can’t!

71% of people in NZ believe that youth team sport is NOT SAFE FOR GAY PEOPLE!

76% of people in NZ believe that gay people are not fully accepted in sporting culture.

What’s the overall vision for The Waterboy?

To make sure every New Zealander has the opportunity to participate in organised sport.
