What is FARA all about?
Fara raises money to fund research to find better treatments and a cure for Friedreich Ataxia. A genetic, degenerative, neuro-muscular disease that affects 1 in 30,000 Australians.
How long have you been operating?
Since 2003 – 14 years
Where did the idea start?
From a group of parents with children diagnosed with Friedreich Ataxia
How do TOWNHALL Citizens or visitors get involved? Are you open to collaboration – if so, what kind?
We would love Citizens to get involved in our Lend Us Some Muscle Challenge in May, or organise their own fundraising event. See our website fara.org.au for further details.
Do you have any success stories?
We have lots of wonderful success stories, high teas, golf days, swim-a-thons, trivia nights, football jersey auctions, marathon runners etc.
Do you have a project on TOWNHALL or an important event or mission coming up?
Our next main event is the Lend Us Some Muscle Challenge from 18th – 20th May 2018. To be involved you register at fara.org.au, we’ll send you some Lend Us Some Muscle tattoos, put them on, take photos of yourselves doing something challenging or active, and post in on social media. Easy! You can also raise extra money for your challenge too.
Are you raising funds for anything specific?
Gene therapy is a promising area of research at the moment, and we are raising money to ensure Australia is clinical trial ready.
Any interesting fact you can share?
1 in 90 people are carriers of the FA gene and don’t know it until it effects someone in their family.
What’s the overall vision for FARA?
To find a cure for Friedreich Ataxia
What’s your ‘why’?
To give Hope to those currently living with Friedreich Ataxia.
